Australia's first urban resort, The Calile Brisbane, has been named as the HICAP ANZ Development of the Year for 2019.
Part of the annual Hotel Investment Conference Asia, the award recognises newly built, redeveloped, or repositioned hotels or resorts that opened in Australia or New Zealand between July 2018 and June 2019.
Located in Brisbane's vibrant James Street precinct, and boasting the largest inner-city pool in the country, the architecturally-designed Calile hotel - managed by Australian-owned TFE Hotels and owned by Brisbane-based Calile Malouf Investments, draws on Queensland's sub-tropical climate to deliver a resort experience in an urban setting.

The Calile is the latest design to be unveiled by architects Richards and Spence, and is their very first hotel development. The property expands on the established white brick, breezy theme that has become Richards and Spence's signature style in the James Street precinct and the use of arches throughout is a nod to the Malouf family's heritage.

Designed with the guest experience in mind, The Calile's 175 generous-sized rooms invite the climate in and feature a mix of individual balconies, and two private rooftop terraces. Open-air spaces and breezeways link to rooms, a generous conference space, Grand Ballroom, day spa and Hellenika Greek-style restaurant.
Michael Herman, Executive Development Manager – Hospitality, TFE Hotels described the Calile as an extraordinary development from inception to opening and that TFE Hotels has been incredibly pleased and privileged to partner with owner/developer Calile Malouf Investments (CMI) and their architects, Richards and Spence to bring Australia’s first urban resort to life.
"Above all, The Calile Hotel was designed to make the most of Brisbane’s climate and all the circulation spaces are naturally ventilated with the help of fans and gardens. And, where possible, the architectural products used at The Calile Hotel have been ethically sourced. A good example of this is the extensive and unusual use of cork throughout the rooms which creates natural acoustic and thermal properties that are suited to a sub-tropical experience. And from floors to ceilings, a cleverly designed rooftop space adds the wow factor for events," said Mr Herman.
"Undoubtedly The Calile is one of the top hotels in the country and together with CMI and Richards and Spence, we feel incredibly honoured to win.”
