Putting Perth’s architecture on the world stage, the development will include a five-star hotel, luxury apartments, offices, bars, restaurants and retail facilities.
New York-based architectural firm Rex has designed their first southern-hemisphere project proposal. "It's incredibly exciting, it's also a bit daunting because this is obviously a huge commitment on the part of the city to do this," architect Joshua Prince-Ramus said.
The signature feature of the Elizabeth Quay development is a cantilevered section in the middle of the tallest tower, in the shape of a ‘+’ sign. The luxury project will offer panoramic views of the Swan River. "[The towers] are memorable pieces of architecture that will put the city further onto the world stage," said Brookfield's Carl Schibrowski.
Although there is currently an oversupply of accommodation in Perth, Brookfield says it is confident the project stacks up, and is searching for an operator. "There is a real absence of good hotels in the city," Mr Schibrowski said. "A lot of the hotel stock in the city is quite aged."
The development’s apartments are expected to be released to market in late 2018, and the office space is expected to be available by 2023.
Rex is also creating the Perelman Centre, built on the site of New York’s World Trade Centre, due for completion in 2020. It will serve as a venue for a range of performing arts including dance, theatre, and music, as well as the Tribeca Film Festival.
