With high-rise buildings unpopular with the public, architect Robert Morris-Nunn has created an innovative approach for a new hotel in Hobart.
With public outcry over two potential skyscraper hotels for Hobart, architect Robert Morris-Nunn has proposed a floating hotel on the River Derwent near the Regatta Grounds. This innovative approach would have around 270 rooms plus and restaurants, shops and bars.
Hobart Not Highrise president Brian Corr champions the concept, saying “It’s somebody thinking laterally, instead of going up you stay down.” He continues “I think there would be a lot of local support for the idea … Robert Morris-Nunn has a history of doing things well, and doing things properly.”
Hobart City Council Alderman Helen Burnet said “I think it’s an innovative approach to finding solutions to keep the height down and I look forward to the discussion around the idea,” she said.
“The massive public outcry that has ensued was enough to convince me that I should add my voice as a designer and work to offer a positive alternative,” said Morris-Nunn, and they hope to propose the plans formally to the Hobart City Council late next month.
