The old Northbank Goods Shed site fronting Melbourne's Yarra River has received the green light for a $450 million hotel, residential and commercial redevelopment by privately-owned developer Riverlee.
In 2015 Riverlee Group acquired the Northbank Goods Shed site from the state government for $28.5 million which has now received approval for the restoration.
Designed by Fender Katsalidis, the development will see a 180-room hotel, 250 apartments, function centre, retail and a 3,500 sqm public park replace the heritage-listed Goods Shed 5, maritime crane and timber wharf, which was built in 1855.
Riverlee development director David Lee said that their "premier revitalisation project, Northbank Goods Shed, was given the tick of approval by City of Melbourne’s Future Melbourne Committee.”
“We are excited to see this site of such historical and social significance reach its next important development milestone, with the site now one step closer to becoming a new world-class waterfront precinct."
The Docklands and Yarra River’s Northbank will be provided with a pedestrian link via the public park and the historic Goods Shed will be restored into an event space on the waterfront.
With construction starting Q2 2019, also slated to be retained and restored is the site’s heritage listed crane and approximately 220 metres of the wharf itself.
