Tourism Accommodation Australia CEO Michael Johnson has welcomed praise from NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian for the contribution made by hotels in the fight against COVID-19.
The hotel industry has been singled out for praise by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian as one of the key contributors to the fight against COVID-19 .
Speaking on Friday, Ms Berejiklian said housing large numbers of international travellers returning to Australia posed a major logistical challenge that had been successfully managed.
“Ensuring all returning travelers were quarantined for 14 days in hotels was a key decision that led to NSW flattening the curve,” she said.
“We know quarantine hasn’t been easy for anyone involved, which is why I’d like to thank the returning travellers as well as the accommodation industry, 31 participating hotels and their staff for adapting at short notice to help us manage this unprecedented situation.”

Since the end of March when travel quarantine was initiated in a bid to help contain the spread of COVID-19, 13,000 people have self-isolated in hotels across the state, including 1,059 families with children housed in serviced apartments.
Tourism Accommodation Australia CEO MIchael Johnson said it was pleasing to see the industry meet the high-level of logistical challenge with such success, and to receive the praise of government leaders.
“We are certainly proud of what our industry has been able to contribute in the fight against COVID-19 by stepping up and assisting with quarantine measures and medical accommodation in this unprecedented situation,” he said.
“Like many industries and individuals, hotels and staff were required to adapt quickly and with short notice.
“At present 3,637 people are still in hotel quarantine accommodation and we will continue to support wherever we can in the fight against this pandemic, as we await a return to business."
