This new boutique property opened in October 2020, and is dramatically set against the backdrop of picturesque views of The Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu. Somewhere between an alpine-chic lodge and a hotel. WILLIAMS MEDIA talks with Gaurang Jhunjhnuwala CEO of Naumi Hotels Australia & New Zealand and Toni Brandso Director at Material Creative about this historic building which began as Queenstown’s original ‘dairy’ or corner store in the 1920s.
A rustic glamour and old world charm come together in this lovingly refurbished central corner of Queenstown. Taking European rural influences and combining them with a daring, fresh and local approach, Naumi Hotels has created a property with a lived-in, laid-back glamour. This new boutique property opened in October 2020, and is dramatically set against the backdrop of picturesque views of The Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu. Somewhere between an alpine-chic lodge and a hotel, The Dairy sits in a historic building which began as Queenstown’s original ‘dairy’ or corner store in the 1920s.
Gaurang Jhunjhnuwala CEO of Naumi Hotels Australia & New Zealand told WILLIAMS MEDIA, "The Dairy Private Hotel by Naumi is a charming new boutique property, somewhere between a lodge and a hotel. We've combined rustic charm with our signature bold design to create something very special for Queenstown. Our use of exquisite House of Hackney wallpapers both on the walls and ceilings in the guest rooms creates the charming, eclectic vibe we love at Naumi. It has an almost alpine feel, with its views across to the snow-topped Remarkables mountain range and timber clad exterior."
The design features exquisite wallpapers from the luxury British interiors brand House of Hackney who take inspiration from the British print houses and combine it with a modern twist. A masterstroke was putting these stunning wallpapers on the bedroom ceilings to dramatic effect.
Toni Brandso, Director at Material Creative told WILLIAMS MEDIA "Completing this voluptuous renovation just after the 2020 lockdowns was no mean feat. The design intent was to create a beautifully unique boutique hotel interior that exuded a lived-in, yet considered "rustic glamour”. Inspired and motivated to create an interior that speaks to our love of designing the unexpected, infusing decorative freedom with craftsmanship as well as honouring the history of the building and area. The 15 room hotel is based around the notion of the chic rustic glamour style found in traditional European ski chalets, yet our approach also injected a distinctive NZ twist that is daring, fresh, and local. This mix of local and international influences has formed a timeless and bold curated hotel interior."
The bedrooms continue the alpine chic feel and are linked to the common areas by an exquisite geometric bespoke carpet. The Oasis rooms have wonderful views out to The Remarkables mountains, while the spacious Junior Suite dazzles with clashing interiors, offering a new spin on a romantic retreat, complete with a private balcony.
An inviting lounge with roaring fire and comfy sofas is the perfect spot to take tea (or whiskey) and relax in between adventures, and plays host to a complimentary drinks hour every evening from 5-6pm.
The art-filled Den offers another sanctuary for guests to enjoy. With a nod to its past as Queenstown’s original corner store, guests can indulge their inner child with an old- fashioned kiwiana sweet selection or make a brew at the espresso station. Outdoors, a fire pit and jacuzzi can be booked for private use.
