Crowne Plaza will make its return to Port Moresby in July 2019 after the signing of an agreement between IHG and owners OPH Limited.
Designed to provide a home away from home for business and leisure travellers to Papua New Guinea, Crowne Plaza Residences Port Moresby will feature 54 elegantly-styled 2- and 3-bedroom units, as well as an all-day dining restaurant, bar, a gym, and meeting facilities.
With construction nearing completion, the leading upscale hotel will re-enter the market in July 2019. It will boast an enviable new address within the larger Nambawan Plaza Development in the CBD adjacent to Deloitte building, the city’s newest, ultra-modern prime office complex with breath-taking views across the harbour.
Abhijay Sandilya, Senior Director of Development, Australasia, at IHG said: “The Crowne Plaza brand has a long and respected history in Papua New Guinea, so we are very excited to bring it back to Port Moresby, after a brief hiatus. The quality and location of Crowne Plaza Residences Port Moresby, along with the power of the IHG system, are likely to make it a market leader. In fact, we have already had strong interest in forward bookings by a number of blue chip corporate customers.”
In recent years Port Moresby has been economically booming, with a substantial growth in construction of housing, office towers, shopping malls and commercial establishments. Its waterfront area has been completely redeveloped with apartments, restaurants and shopping centres, and sporting facilities were upgraded significantly for the 2015 South Pacific Games and the 2016 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup. A large Convention Centre was built and the Jacksons International Airport was redeveloped in 2018.
Anthony Smare, Chairman of Nambawan Super Limited, the majority shareholder of OPH Limited, said: “Papua New Guinea has an exciting economic future, demonstrated by the hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in 2018 which brought many world leaders to the city. It demonstrates the need for a contemporary, upscale hotel that embraces both business and leisure travel. We already have a fantastic relationship with IHG and are confident that Crowne Plaza Residences Port Moresby will capitalise on the city’s growing corporate and leisure demand.”
Port Moresby is the largest city in Papua New Guinea, and the largest city in the South Pacific, outside of Australia and New Zealand, with a population of more than 450,000 and growing quickly. It’s the main point of entry into PNG for air-traffic and most of the boat-traffic.
IHG currently operates 47 hotels in Australasia, including: InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, voco, and Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Indigo with a further 29 in the development pipeline, including Hotel Indigo and EVEN Hotels.
