Narooma Merivale. Justin Hemmes buys second NSW South Coast Narooma Hotel, The Whale Inn sold by ResortBrokers’ NSW South Coast Specialists Russell Rogers and Sarah Hutchins.
Hospitality giant Merivale, with Justin Hemmes as its CEO, has doubled down on its investment on the NSW South Coast with the purchase of The Whale Inn, a boutique hotel and restaurant in Narooma.
Right in the heart of the Eurobodalla region, The Whale Inn is in a prime location on 3,474 sqm with outstanding views of the inlet and beaches. It has 17 individually-appointed rooms and suites, as well as the 48 seat The Whale restaurant and bar.
Hemmes has made no secret of his love for Narooma and the South Coast, with Merivale having recently announced the purchase of The Quarterdeck, a tiki bar set on the shores of Forsters Bay.
“Narooma has become my second home and the backdrop to so many of my happiest memories with my family. I think it is one of the most beautiful spots in the world”, he said.
The sale of the freehold going concern was handled by ResortBrokers’ NSW South Coast Specialists Russell Rogers and Sarah Hutchins at an undisclosed price.
“This is really positive news for the south coast accommodation sector, with a company of the size of Merivale showing faith in what is an outstanding motel in a fantastic region,” Mr Rogers said.
“Justin Hemmes was a pleasure to do business with. He really knows the industry and his involvement in this beautiful part of the world could be a real game changer for the area,” he said.
Justin Hemmes has become a pioneer within the Australian hospitality industry and is the head of the rapidly growing Merivale empire that owns approximately 70 pubs, hotels, restaurants and other venues. He has established a strategy of buying venues, renovating to a high standard and hiring a known chef to improve both popularity and profitability.
Merivale has taken over the property from Matthew Deveson and Jen Houghton-Deveson, who owned and operated the inn for 15 years.
“Matt was a true gentleman; a man of great kindness and dignity who truly loved Narooma and the wonderful people who call it home. It is an honour for us to continue Matt and Jen’s legacy,” Mr Hemmes said.
Merivale will receive the keys to The Whale Inn this week. The company says it will keep the accommodation open, while the restaurant will close for a “quick refresh”, before opening again next month. It says refurbishment plans for the property will be announced in due course.
