LARRY MOGELONSKY, MBA, P. ENG. PRINCIPAL, HOTEL MOGEL CONSULTING and FOUNDER, LMA COMMUNICATIONS
It’s hard to imagine that a background as an engineer and packaged-goods marketer would lead to a career in hospitality.
After a formal education in engineering and business, plus a stint as a professional civil engineer, Larry’s business career started with brand management at Procter & Gamble. This was followed by a half-dozen years at a top ten ad agency, where he was the team leader for the Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts business.
Smitten with the hospitality ‘bug’, Larry started LMA Communications Inc., a specialty consultancy dedicated to the hospitality industry. Fast forward some 26 years since its inception; LMA has hotel and tourism clients across the globe, and has been recognized with nearly 100 awards from HSMAI for its creativity and business acumen. The Agency has also been awarded TravelClick’s Worldwide e-Marketer of the Year.
While retaining the chairmanship of LMA, Larry formed Hotel Mogel Consulting Ltd., dedicated to solving critical issues for property developers, owners and operators. Most recently, Hotel Mogel completed an assignment to build the first luxury property in Brooklyn, the William Vale Hotel (193 rooms). The Company is currently working on projects in both Canada and USA.
Having worked with hundreds of independent properties, it was a natural progression to reflect upon this extensive experience through the written word. Over the past four years, Larry has published 900+ articles in: Hotels Magazine, HotelNewsNow, Hotel Executive, eHotelier, Hotel Interactive, Hotels Online, HospitalityNet, Today’s Hotelier (an AAHOA publication), and Canadian Lodging News. Every Friday, his weekly newsletter, The Hotel Mogel, reaches 4,500+ hotel executives and senior managers. In addition to periodicals,
Larry has written four texts addressing operational and marketing issues for hoteliers. Entitled, Are You an Ostrich or a Llama?, Llama Rules, Hotel Llama, and The Llama is Inn respectively, over 10,000 copies have been sold. All four books are currently available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble as well as Indigo in Canada. The Llama is Inn is also available worldwide as an electronic edition.
Larry has been keynote speaker at over two dozen worldwide industry conferences. He has lectured at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration and Ryerson University. Larry has also been recognized by HSMAI as one of the Top 25 Minds in Hospitality. He also serves on advisory boards for several new hotel-related technology firms.
Larry’s passions, apart from hospitality are duplicate bridge and Canadian art. Interestingly, in duplicate bridge, he often has time to compete against his Four Seasons Hotels’ mentor, Isadore Sharp, as they both play in the same Toronto clubs. Art collection is a natural, as his father Alex wrote several dozen texts on art education, and his childhood home served as a magnet for numerous budding artists. Larry has continued this tradition as he serves as mentor of several young artists, helping them in tangible and intangible ways to grow their careers. Larry resides in Toronto with Maureen, his wife of 36 years, and an oversized Bouvier des Flandres named Hondo.
