An Australian couple is attracting global attention after announcing they will raffle off their Micronesian island resort rather than selling it.
An Australian couple has decided to raffle off their Micronesian island resort rather than sell it, in a move that has attracted bidders from around the world.
Australians Doug and Sally Beitz moved to the Micronesian island of Kosrae with their three young children in 1994.
They built the 16-bed Kosrae Nautilus Resort themselves, and now operate the business, which is debt free and employs 16 full-time staff.
Kosrae is about 100 sqaure kilometers and is home to 6,000 people.
The Beitzes says they would like to give others the opportunity now, and want to spend more time with family in Australia.
“We’re so glad the kids had an opportunity to grow up away from some of the distractions of city life,” said Doug Beitz.
“We’ve had our time in the sun and enjoyed a career most people would never even dare dream about, but our current goal now is to become professional grandparents. We feel like a new chapter in our lives is beginning, and we’re ready to pass the baton to someone else,” said Doug.
The raffle was launched in April, and 53,000 people from 150 countries have bought tickets.
Tickets are US$49 (A$65) each.
The raffle will be drawn on Tuesday 26 July.
