Sydney hotelier Justin Hemmes has made this year’s Rich List, joining the likes of billionaire Harry Triguboff, Melbourne apartment developer Tim Gurner, and Multiplex heir Andrew Roberts.
Of the 200 names making up the Rich List, 51 of those belong to property magnates. The 45-year-old Hemmes and his family have amassed an enormous $951m fortune through the ownership of 70 pubs, hotels, restaurants and venues in and around Sydney, including the likes of The Ivy.
He will be among the 12 new names to join the Financial Review Rich List when the 2018 edition is published on Friday. He will debut in 78th position.
It isn’t the first time the famous Hemmes name has appeared among the ranks of Australia’s most elite. Hemme’s late father John and mother Merivale appeared on the BRW Rich List in 1984, with an estimated minimum net wealth of $12m.
His parents attribute their wealth to the John and Merivale clothing chain, started after John moved to Australia in 1952, where he met and married Merivale.
Together, they set up a business which grew into one of Australia’s leading fashion chains in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
