Melbourne filmmaking team Nadia Tass and David Parker have listed Athelstane House in Queenscliff for sale through ResortBrokers West Victoria agent Hugh Thomas.
Director Tass and writer-producer Parker purchased the freehold of the 10-room boutique hotel in 1997 with the view to continuing the historic property’s long-standing use as an accommodation business.
Athelstane House was originally built in the early 1860s as a private residence on a parcel of land in central Queenscliff that cost £75 in 1855. The property later became a boarding house and has continuously operated as an accommodation business for over a century. Today, Athelstane House is Queenscliff’s oldest operating hotel.
Through their production company Cascade Films, Ms Tass and Mr Parker have produced several iconic Australian comedies, debuting in 1986 with hit Malcolm, followed by The Big Steal, Rikky & Pete, Amy and Pure Luck. Cascade’s oeuvre also includes the drama film Matching Jack and the ABC/BBC mini-series Stark, based on the Ben Elton novel.
Spanning almost 1,000 sqm, Athelstane House is located a few minutes’ walk from the beach, Queenscliff Harbour, Citizens Park and the main shopping strip in Hesse Street.
Says Mr Thomas, “Queenscliff is less than 90 minutes’ drive from Melbourne, so the idea of Athelstane House reverting to its original use as a private residence, either as a coastal getaway or primary home, is entirely conceivable. Or the new owner could continue the accommodation tradition with a viable business that OTAs consistently rank as one of the best hotels, if not the best, in town.”
ResortBrokers is inviting expressions of interest for Athelstane House until Friday, 22 November 2024 at 12 pm (AEST).
