If someone uttered the words ‘coastal town on the northern New South Wales coast’, no one would blame you for casting your mind to a certain popular hotspot. However, there’s another town which, so far, remains both slightly less discovered and slightly more relaxing – as a beachside town should be. Enter Yamba, a hidden gem, where you will find the Surf Yamba, a new boutique hotel opening 24 September, which is set to truly put this charming town on the map.
Situated just over a one-hour flight from Sydney or an easy seven-hour road trip, and three hours’ drive from Brisbane, The Surf Yamba is the perfect destination for those seeking an escape from the bustle of the city, where you can relax in the picturesque town and take in the sea air. Perched on Yamba’s southern headland, the twelve room Surf Yamba is the first boutique hotel on Yamba’s iconic Main Beach, and with an Australian coastal vibe meets Palm Springs, is set to offer visitors a unique experience so far unseen in the area.
The Surf Yamba has occupied its current beachfront location for almost one hundred years, but this new iteration offers an authentically local experience in an exceptionally private space, where guests are invited to ‘check in and chill out’, enjoy vistas from most rooms and relax on the unmissable roof deck with jaw-dropping views.
David, Andrew and Phillip Mayne are the founders and co-owners of The Surf Yamba, and have considered Yamba a second home for more than forty years. Graziers in their day-to-day life, the Maynes aren’t strangers to the hospitality scene, having owned and operated the Barkly Homestead in the Northern Territory for 15 years. The Mayne family purchased The Surf Yamba twelve years ago and saw the potential in redeveloping the site.
“Yamba has always been our go-to holiday destination, and with The Surf Yamba, we hope to introduce a new generation of Australians to this beautiful area. The hotel has been inspired by the local scenic landscape, iconic beaches and headlands, and the rich heritage of Australia’s surfing culture,” said Andrew.
Designed by Sydney’s Design King Company, a distinctive curved building houses the hotel, representing the classic ocean liners of the 1930s, while from the rooftop terrace and plunge pool, guests will overlook uninterrupted 360-degree views of the ocean.
Responsible for the hotel’s exterior through to the interior finishes including furniture, lighting and artworks, Director Jon King said, “From the outset, our team wanted The Surf Yamba to be relaxed yet sophisticated, with just a hint of nostalgia and romanticism. With a nod to nautical and deco detailing evident on the exterior of Surf Hotel Yamba, it was also vital that the interiors were equally well detailed and thought through, with bespoke touches creating a complete experience. Our aim was to create a special place from which to experience Yamba and its beautiful surrounds.”
At The Surf Yamba, guests will find Italian terrazzo tiles, limited edition artworks by Macedon Ranges artist Elizabeth Barnett and Melbourne visual artist Caroline Walls, bespoke handmade sofas and desks, chairs from Scandinavian-inspired Muuto, Hay Bella coffee tables, and Australian made outdoor furniture by Tait. Leif Products will feature as the amenities offering in the guest rooms, along with bathrobes by luxury Australian linen designer Bemboka, with both of these suppliers speaking to Surf Hotel Yamba’s desire to hero local Australian brands.
The Surf Yamba is also set to become a sought-after wedding and event venue on the North Coast, with the rooftop terrace’s offering sweeping views of the coastal landscape. Choose from Main Beach views from the Pool terrace, complete with sun loungers, and Pippi Beach views from the aptly named ‘Pippi Terrace’ or host a corporate retreat in the Breakwater Room.
In keeping with the laidback nature of the town, guests at The Surf Yamba will be able to order breakfast hampers and charcuterie platters from local café Gather, to enjoy in their ocean view room, the rooftop terrace with heated pool, or to enjoy on the sandy shores of Main Beach.
The Surf Yamba is set to become the new destination holiday on New South Wales’ north coast, and with the hotel making guests feel like it’s Sunday afternoon all year long, it’s easy to see why.
The Surf Yamba will officially open its doors from 24 September, with rooms starting from $295.
