Mr. Black is Managing Director of JLL’s Hotel Project and Development Services practice where he oversees all hospitality projects for the firm for such clients as Host Hotels, Hyatt, AJ Capital Partners, Dorchester Collection, Northwood Hospitality, Westmont Hospitality, GEM Realty, Aspen Skiiing Company and JMB Realty. He is currently serving as Principal-in-Charge and Client Relationship Manager on hotel projects in the U.S., Latin America, and Europe for Host Hotels & Resorts, the country’s largest hotel REIT. He was named with JLL as 2007 “Project Manager of the Year” at Chicago’s Commercial Real Estate Awards.
Experience
Mr. Black has over 30 years of hospitality and real estate development experience working on luxury hotels, conference centers, corporate offices, and complex redevelopment projects. He began the hotels and hospitality Project & Development Services practice for JLL. As head of the Midwest PDS team, he oversaw such projects as Hyatt Lodge at McDonald’s, the historic $35 million U505 project at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, Aon Corporation’s $100 million, 545,000 s.f. world headquarters and 402,000 s.f. suburban campus, the 158,000 s.f. BP Learning and Conference Center with adjacent 300-room hotel, Lake Forest Graduate School of Management, and the Blackstone Hotel. He has provided real estate consulting services for the $800 million Diplomat Hotel in Miami, Florida, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Union Pacific Railroad, Amtrak, the Illinois Facilities Fund, and HSBC’s new suburban Chicago headquarters.
Mr. Black began his real estate career with the Corporate Design, Construction and Purchasing division of Four Seasons Hotels, Ltd., as project coordinator for their 424-room, $50 million Mandalay Hotel. He served as Vice President, Development for Las Colinas Hotels Corporation, a division of the Dallas-based Southland Financial Corporation, where he oversaw the development, design and construction of the $110 million Four Seasons Resort and Club, the Four Seasons Hotel Austin and the Sheraton-Dallas Hotel and Towers. He also directed the design and construction of five build-to-suit projects, including the $31 million Southwestern Bell Advanced Education Center campus, a corporate training campus with state-of-the-art training center, twelve residential buildings and recreation center on a 22 acre site.
Prior to joining JLL, Mr. Black was Vice President, Development with U.S. Equities Development, Inc., where he directed projects such as 840 N. Michigan Avenue, a $50 million 100,000 s.f. specialty retail facility; Amtrak’s Chicago Union Station Passenger Facility and Food Emporium; the $100 million printing/distribution facility for Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Public Radio and predevelopment on 800-room Hyatt Regency McCormick Place. Mr. Black also provided development consulting to the City of Chicago for its North Loop Redevelopment project, a nine-block tax increment financing (TIF) district and directly consulted on three hotel projects including Kimpton’s Hotel Burnham, Hotel Allegro and Hotel Monaco.
