The $500 million Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour officially opened on Tuesday marking Sydney’s first new-build luxury hotel since the Sydney Olympics opposite the new International Convention Centre.
Owner Dr Jerry Schwartz handed the five star hotel over to 33 different charities on Tuesday night, collectively raising over $500,000 for charity.
The 590-room 35-level hotel, which was launched by NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall, will join another 4,800 new hotel beds expected to be completed in the next seven years.
Dr Schwartz commented on Tuesday, “With Sydney’s demand – especially at the top end of the market – expected to continue growing strongly, and with the International Convention Centre next door, this is a five-star development that made sense.”
Dr Jerry Schwartz and Simon McGrath officially opening the new 5-star hotel.
“Five-star hotels demand far higher levels of staffing and ongoing costs but the Sydney market is well placed to support this development and the many other five-star hotels expected to enter the market over the next five years.”
Operaters AccorHotels will also be launching the Sydney's new The William Inglis Hotel, MGallery by Sofitel due to open next year and The Porter House, MGallery by Sofitel planned to open in 2019.
Sydney’s ICC conference visitors are expected to utilise the hotel who will be a big contributor to the tourism sector, said Simon McGrath, AccorHotels’ Pacific chief operating officer.
