With international visitor spend growing a further 6 per cent in the last year to reach $41.3 billion, and 43 cents of every tourism dollar being spent in our regions, investment opportunities in Australia’s regional tourism destinations have been showcased by Tourism Australia and Austrade.
New investment and marketing collateral has been released by Tourism Australia and Austrade, designed to drive investment in regional Australia that will create new jobs, drive economic growth and help attract even more tourists.
Created as part of the Australian Government’s Regional Tourism Investment Strategy, which seeks to spread the benefits of tourism beyond the major gateways, the collateral provides a snapshot of key tourism information such as visitation, airport infrastructure, accommodation and the investment landscape for eight iconic regional destinations:
Each region was nominated by their respective state or territory government and is indicative of the opportunity across regional Australia.
For example, a key area of growth proved to be the Whitsunday region which attracts more than one million visitors each year and is increasingly sought after by international visitors to Australia. Tourism in the Whitsundays has been on an upward trajectory over the past five years with growth in visitation increasing at an average rate of 2.1% per annum. In FY17, international visitors accounted for more than one third of nights spent in the Whitsunday tourism region.
Australia remains an attractive destination for tourism investment – the national economy has outperformed its peers for more than two decades and is in its 27th year of consecutive economic growth; the only developed economy in the world to achieve this distinction. With respect to tourism, international arrivals and spend are at record levels – growing at more than twice the pace of the national economy. International visitor spend has grown a further 6 per cent in the last year to reach $41.3 billion, with spending by Chinese tourists alone reaching $10 billion.
Tourism Australia’s research indicates that international visitors are seeking world-class nature and wildlife, food and wine, and aquatic and coastal experiences; all of which are abundant in regional Australia. “With strong growth and 43 cents of every tourism dollar being spent in our regions, the importance of Australia’s regional destinations cannot be underestimated,” Tourism Australia’s Managing Director, John O’Sullivan.
In addition, Australia is the 10th largest international tourism market and United Nations World Tourism Organization figures show first for visitor spend per trip.
