A new partnership has been announced between Cardrona Alpine Resort & Queenstown businessman John Darby, combining the Cardrona and Soho ski areas to form 900ha of skiable terrain, making it the largest single ski field in New Zealand.
The Soho Basin is directly behind the existing Cardrona Alpine Resort with views of the Southern Alps & the Wakatipu Basin.
Cardrona Ski Field released in a statement, "Terrain work, safety planning, snowmaking, utilities, more dining options is involved in the preparation."
"We’re really focused on preparing the Cardrona side for the increase in capacity that we know we’ll need as soon as Soho goes live – we’re 3 years into a 5 year plan to get ready."
"We’re looking at a couple more years to finish the Cardrona developments before lift development begins in Soho."
The two ski areas will join together, adding 500ha of skiable terrain to the Cardrona Alpine Resort ski field, which will more than doubles Cardrona’s total size to over 900ha.
The expansion also gives Cardona opportunities to grow its summer operations, including mountain biking, dining and other events.
"The Soho development was one of the key reasons we replaced the old McDougall’s Quad – we needed a fast access lift to get you all over the mountain."
"All our developments over the past couple of years have been to give all of you more room to move & eat, in preparation for more terrain."
Cardrona Ski Field is currently looking at how all these developments will impact their summer operations which they plan to improve.
