The Hotel Britomart opens in mid-2020 at the top of sustainability scale.
New Zealand’s first 5 Green Star hotel is set to open in the coming months.
Developed through Cooper and Company, The Hotel Britomart already has 5 Green Star certification from the NZ Green Building Council for its design, and is on track to achieve 5 Green Stars for its build process.
Once complete, it will be managed according to the NZ Green Building Council’s Green Star Performance Tool.
Cooper and Company Chief Executive Matthew Cockram said sustainability was one of the key objectives of the organisation.
“We have a sustainability framework that guides all our endeavours, and we find adhering to it reinforces outcomes that have a greater benefit than just a short-term monetary result.”

In 2018, Britomart became the first property company in New Zealand to sign up to the Green Star Performance rating, an innovative system for measuring and managing buildings to make them operate as efficiently as possible.
The Green Star build process examines everything from careful removal and disposal of soil from the building site to the environmentally considerate selection of building materials and the management of construction methodologies to minimise waste to landfill.
During the construction of the hotel, concrete mixes were altered from the norm to incorporate recycled water, and aggregate made from crushed demolition concrete.
Efficient energy use has also been paramount to the development with, the hotel boasting efficient air control systems and energy metering, insulation, double-glazing, LED lighting and carefully controlled thermal performance.
The same rigour was applied to the selection of materials for The Hotel Britomart’s interiors, including low or zero-emission materials, renewable timbers, a focus on long-term quality rather than short-term fashion, natural products and low-flow water systems.

Accessories in each room are also being sourced with the hotel’s sustainable objectives top of mind, including organic skincare products whose packaging will be recycled.
The Britomart precinct is also located above the Britomart Transport Centre, Auckland’s busiest public transport hub.
The city’s main ferry terminal is two blocks away, and bus services reaching every part of the city are all within walking distance.
Cooper and Company Development Director Campbell Williamson said Britomart’s 5 Green Star certification also accords with The Tiaki Promise, a responsible tourism initiative created by Air New Zealand, Tourism New Zealand, NZ Māori Tourism and other organisations, which encourages hosts and visitors to take responsibility for safe and sustainable tourism, and act as guardians of land, sea and nature for current and future generations.
“Travellers increasingly want to stay where there is a demonstrated commitment to sustainability beyond asking guests to reuse their towels,” he said.
“Even simpler than that, building sustainably has a much lower immediate and ongoing environmental impact, and our Earth needs that from us.”

CEO at TFE Hotels Antony Ritch told WILLIAMS MEDIA "We’re truly excited that New Zealand will get its first TFE Collection Hotel with one of the country’s most anticipated openings – The Hotel Britomart – in July this year.”
Ritch says The Hotel Britomart, New Zealand’s first five green star hotel, has been designed with sustainability, location and lifestyle in mind.
“The hotel features an integrated lobby, dining and laneway experience that helps tell the story of the Britomart precinct,” he said.
“Guests will delight in the attention to detail and experience in this thoughtfully curated destination,” he said.
“With the TFE Hotels Collection, we are introducing destination hotels that showcase localised experiences in highly unique environments,” Ritch said. “Each has a distinct story and guests are immersed in that story from the moment they arrive.”
TFE Hotels Collection includes the multi-award winning Calile Hotel in Brisbane and properties in historical locations like the Hotel Kurrajong in Canberra and The Savoy on Little Collins in Melbourne – that have been thoughtfully restored to their former glory. The modern boutique-style Gambaro Hotel, with its award-winning Gambaro Seafood Restaurant on the fringe of Brisbane’s CBD, rounds out the current collection with more exciting developments in the pipeline.
