Tourism Accommodation Australia NSW CEO Michael Johnson has commended the state government on its decision to further relax COVID-19 restrictions from July, saying it will allow the hotel industry to create the "much-needed drivers" to bring people back.
The state’s leading tourism accommodation body has praised the further lifting of COVID-19 restrictions from 1 July, with TAA NSW CEO Michael Johnson saying it will make a “real difference” for many hotels.
Mr Johnson told WILLIAMS MEDIA the loosening of restrictions on how many people will be allowed into functions, as well as sporting and cultural events, would be a game changer for the struggling accommodation sector.
“Even if at 25 per cent capacity, a sporting event at a 40,000 capacity stadium has the ability to become a driver of accommodation and the visitor economy," he said.
At a glance:
“Thanks to the NSW Government’s weekend announcement, a number of conferences will now be green-lighted with a COVID-safe checklist plan in place to ensure social distancing and robust hygiene and cleaning protocols occur.
“The changes will finally give our industry the chance to holding meetings and business events, albeit under the one person per four square metre ruling.”
It comes after NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian praised the hotel sector as one of the key contributors to the fight against COVID-19 last month.
Mr Johnson said the next step would be the easing of the socialing distancing laws.
“We'll be working closely with the government to see those restrictions continue to ease,” he said.
"We'd love to see the one person per four square metre rule relaxed to allow one person every two square metres, which would definitely make businesses more viable."
