Dunedin's rich history has provided the inspiration for CL Hotels' latest offering, Ebb-Dunedin.
The natural landscape of New Zealand's South Island has heavily influenced a new hotel set to be launched within the city of Dunedin.
Developed through Dunedin family Property Investment Group CL Hotels, Ebb-Dunedin will ready to welcome guests by summer 2021.
CL Hotels Development Manager Dylan Cazemier said the aim was to build a modern boutique hotel designed to provide guests with relaxed luxury for a restful pause on their journey.
"Inspired by the land, sea and sky that surround us, the contemporary neighbourhood hotel will serve friends, locals, and guests a slice of Dunedin's unique way of life," he said.
"Ebb-Dunedin is opening summer 2021 to welcome friends, guests, lovers, explorers, and escapees."
The hotel is spread over four floors, containing 27 curated rooms, one exquisite two-bed penthouse suite and an onsite cafe/wine bar adjacent to the atrium garden.
All rooms surround a light-filled covered atrium featuring numerous artworks by some of New Zealand’s best artists, creating a sense of being in an exhibition.
Award-winning architect Gary Todd was enlisted to help create a modernist building with a defining black steel structure and glass curtain façade covering the entire front and rear facades.
Mr Todd told WILLIAMS MEDIA the design was reflective of time and place, with Dunedin's own history providing much of the inspiration.
"Contextual research revealed the hotel site was once near the shoreline of the Otago Harbour where travellers first arrived in Dunedin," he said.

"Therefore it was important to reference this historical site and this was done by engaging local artist Simon Kaan to provide an image to visually portray a cultural context of the location and sense of place.
"The resulting art work image was colour printed onto curtain glass façade panels of the building.
"These semi-transparent printed glass panels were designed to screen views from within the hotel suites of the commercial surroundings and provide privacy to the hotel guests.
The bespoke interior architecture for the site was crafted by Sydney based INDYK architects, the team behind award-winning QT Hotels.

Director Shelley Indyk told WILLIAMS MEDIA the opportunity to create a unique boutique hotel in Dunedin, demanded a closer look at Dunedin itself.
"We were inspired by the Edwardian and Gothic gems of Dunedin's 1860's golden era, in particular the banding of black and white contrasting stonework juxtaposed against the weathered copper 'verdigris' roofscapes. The spontaneous sighting of graphic wall murals gave us the confidence that Dunedin city celebrated modern art and creativity," she said
"Dunedin's strong history of fashion design and literary achievement all added to our understanding of this confident little city, and the clarity of light on the landscape was enthralling."
Dunedin's Stewart's Construction is the appointed builder with Sydney based creative agency MAUD leading creative brand direction.
