The joint decision between Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Prime Minister Scott Morrison to shut the border from midnight tomorrow is disappointing but understandable, Accommodation Association of Australia CEO Dean Long says.
The accommodation industry's peak body has come out in support of the closure of the temporary closure of NSW-Victorian border, while also reiterating the important role hotels have played in quarantining incoming travellers.
The NSW Government has announced it will temporarily shut its border with Victoria from 12.01 am Wednesday, 8 July to contain the spread of COVID-19.
The closure follows the concerning spread of COVID-19 in Melbourne.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the decision was made after consulting with the NSW Chief Health Officer and discussions with the Prime Minister and Victorian Premier Dan Andrews.
“The people of NSW have done an incredible job to help stop the spread of COVID-19, allowing us to open up our economy,” she said.
“The outbreak of cases we are seeing in Victoria is putting these gains at risk."
Accommodation Australian of Australia CEO Dean Long described the decision as "disappointing but understandable", adding that hotel operators in Victoria should be commended for their efforts during the pandemic period so far.

"A number of our member hotels were among the very first to come forward to State, Territory and the Federal Governments and hand over their facilities to be used to quarantine incoming travellers," he said.
“This was a decision each and every one of these hotels made in the interests of the public good and in recognition of the scale of the challenge facing government, health authorities and our community.
"Our members continue to do all they can to support the various Departmental and Health Authorities who are running this quarantine accommodation.
"We would also like to extend our thanks to those who are on the frontline battling the pandemic and working long hours to stop the spread and support those who have unfortunately been infected."
