In line with a new Public Health Order issued by NSW Health late last Friday, Lord Howe Island has announced it will reopen travel to visitors from the mainland from August 31 this year, a revision from its planned reopening set for August 3.
Lord Howe Island will now welcome mainland visitors from August 31, following the announcement of a new Public Health Order issued for NSW last Friday.
In a statement released on Monday, the Lord Howe Island Tourism Board said the decision was made in response to an increase in coronavirus cases in the mainland, particularly in the states of Victoria and New South Wales.
Board CEO Peter Adams told WILLIAMS MEDIA it was an uncertain situation that they would navigate as best they could.
"We do not know what Health Minister Brad Hazzard will decide later in August in regard to further extending the restriction to travel, except that if the mainland situation looks good, with little or no community transmissions, it is likely the island will be open for visitors," he said.
"Ultimately, it is the Minister for Health’s decision based on NSW Health’s expert advice.
"However, our understanding is that NSW Health feel it will not be until later this month before it becomes clearer whether their restrictions and actions have been successful in containing the most recent outbreaks."
