InterContinental Hotels Group has announced its new-build hotels in Sydney and Adelaide will be characterised by a range of sustainability initiatives.
InterContinental Hotel Group's Crowne Plaza brand will showcase a renewed focus on sustainability in two new-build hotels set to open in the coming months.
Crowne Plaza Sydney Darling Harbour, opening 1 October, and Crowne Plaza Adelaide, opening in November, will join the newly launched Crowne Plaza Hobart as part of "brand transformation" based on a range of initiatives designed to support local communities, reduce carbon footprint, reduce energy and limit paper waste.
Sustainable dining practices
Sustainable dining is a fixure of Crowne Plaza Hobart which instills a farm-to-table philosophy with its two restaurants, focusing on small batch suppliers and low waste processes, including a partnership with Macquarie Point’s ‘Edible Precinct’ where organic waste is dehydrated and composted to fuel the rooftop gardens.
Crowne Plaza Sydney Darling Harbour will be introducing MyCheck technology throughout its restaurant and bars for a digital dining experience where guests are able to interact with digital menus, ordering and payment through their own device – ensuring zero paper waste or disposable menus, as well as enhanced safety with contactless ordering.

Across the three new hotels, ORCA food waste technology will feature in the kitchens to further reduce, dispose and reuse food waste from each restaurant and bar, as well as its conferencing facilities. Plastic straws and disposable plastic water bottles are also a thing of the past in all IHG hotels.
IHG’s ‘Awesome Partnership’ with OzHarvest will also extend into the new hotels, with Crowne Plaza Adelaide and Sydney Darling Harbour signed up as participating hotels to rescue perishable excess food which is delivered to communities in need.
From September to February 2020, the food rescue program saw approximately 1,500kgs rescued from various IHG hotels and resorts across the country, equating to almost 5,000 meals and about 350kg of food per month rescued.

Paperless check in and bamboo room cards
Crowne Plaza Sydney Darling Harbour and Crowne Plaza Adelaide will introduce paperless check-in and check-out for guests to eliminate paper waste when the hotels opens in October and November.
The sustainable practice is an innovation already rolled out across selected hotels across the region, including Crowne Plaza Auckland that pioneered paperless check-in in New Zealand in May 2019.
The new system was projected to significantly reduce paper usage with an expected 500,000 sheets of A4 paper saved annually.
The introduction of bamboo key cards will also feature as part of the check-in process across the Crowne Plaza hotels in Hobart, Adelaide and Darling Harbour.
