Ebb Dunedin that opened on the 5th of March is a new modern boutique hotel, the perfect base to explore, escape or simply go with the flow.
The journey began in 2017 when local Dunedin family property investment group, CL Hotels, found a site that presented the perfect opportunity to blend their passion for hospitality, architecture, and art.
Ebb Dunedin is a contemporary neighbourhood hotel that provides relaxed luxury on your journey. Dunedin’s history & coastline was the inspiration for the hotel, designed by local architect Gary Todd and Sydney based interior Architect Indyk Architects, bringing their characteristic eclectic flair to Ebb’s interiors.
To respect the past and provide a modern influence for the future, Ebb is designed as a strikingly modernist building primarily of concrete, steel and glass with a scale that is considerate to and yet juxtaposes the composition of the adjacent heritage, commercial and residential buildings.
As locals, it was important that the hotel captured a sense of Dunedin. The group commissioned local artist and collaborator Simon Kaan to create an artwork to be printed onto the 20m long glass façade. The artwork depicts the heads of the Otago Harbour, with the view of the land and sky from the sea, the view Polynesian travellers saw when first arriving to the tidal flats of Ōtepoti Dunedin by waka. The artwork is visible from the street for all members of the public to be able to enjoy and reflect on a historic point in time for Ōtepoti Dunedin.
The hotel was named Ebb because of the site’s historic location on the edge of the tidal flats of the Otago Harbour before the land was reclaimed. Each level has its own distinct atrium lounge above covered internal gardens for guests to enjoy a drink or read a book, surrounded by the work of national artists exhibited on the walls.
Ebb is proud to have worked with some of best architects, designers, creators and makers in the business to bring it to life these include; the aforementioned architects Gary Todd and Indyk Architects, Simon Kaan the commissioned façade artist, Bentu a China based furniture design company, Simon James a New Zealand based furniture designer, Ashley and Co a modern day scent company providing luscious bathroom products, ECC for designer lighting, Jack Tilson for in house ceramics, Ilya Volykine featuring 10 prominent work in the atrium and Irenaeus Herok an Australian photographer that captured the essence of Dunedin’s coastal geography that form sthe hotel’s identity. Heroks’s 14 works feature in the atrium and are available for purchase in the current exhibition.
Ebb also houses Ebb-Cafe, that serves local and seasonal food to the good people of Dunedin.
