A Jewel in the Kimberley: Eco Beach Resort's Unique Story
After an inspirational fishing trip, where builder and entrepreneur Karl Plunkett fell in love with Roebuck Bay’s breathtaking coastline and crystal blue waters, Eco Beach Resort was established in 1999. In 2000, founder Karl Plunkett seized the opportunity to rebuild Eco Beach Resort with a renewed focus on environmental preservation and enhanced structural engineering performance. The transformation resulted in a thriving sustainable tourism retreat, featuring luxurious, structurally engineered eco tents and villas designed to withstand extreme weather conditions.
Today, Eco Beach Resort features 57 eco-friendly tents, villas, and beach houses, complemented by a restaurant and an infinity pool that offers arguably the best ocean view in Western Australia. Nestled on the Indian Ocean coastline within the extraordinary Kimberley environment, renowned for its untouched beauty and diverse ecosystems, Eco Beach Resort stands out as a premier tourism destination in the region. Recognised as the global leader in sustainable tourism, the resort, which was inducted into the Australian Tourism Hall of Fame in 2013, has achieved Eco Certification status and has won numerous awards including British Airway’s Tourism for Tomorrow Regional Winner and is a five-time gold winner of the WA Unique Accommodation Award.
Australian Travel Boom: A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats
Industry experts predict that international arrivals will rebound to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2024, says Tom Butler of Nash Advsiory. This resurgence is bolstered by Jetstar Asia's recent launch of direct flights from Singapore to Broome, which commenced on June 25, 2024. These new flights offer direct access to a substantial international visitor base, increasing Broome's allure as a top-tier destination and driving significant tourism growth in the Kimberley region.
Amid this evolving landscape, there is a growing demand for experiences that foster disconnection from the digital world and reconnection with nature. Eco Beach Resort is uniquely positioned to capitalise on this trend through its achievement of an incredible balance between comfort and natural experience, allowing guests to be completely immersed in the wilderness of the Kimberley region while still enjoying the luxury and comfort of modern accommodations. By providing a serene retreat that emphasises sustainable practices and authentic connections with nature, Eco Beach Resort stands to benefit immensely from the burgeoning interest in experiential and eco-friendly travel.
Future Prospects: Growth Potential at Eco Beach Resort
Eco Beach Resort has ambitious plans to upgrade its facilities, aiming to create an even more luxurious resort experience. These refurbishments, which do not require council planning, will elevate the guest experience while maintaining the resort’s strong commitment to sustainability. The planned enhancements will further solidify Eco Beach Resort’s status as a premier destination for eco-conscious travellers. Additionally, the 1.4 kilometre airstrip provides opportunity to make the resort more accessible, attracting more visitors to the secluded paradise.
A New Chapter for Eco Beach Resort
After nearly 28 years of dedication and vision, founder Karl Plunkett believes it is time to hand over the keys to new ownership and operators. Karl’s unwavering commitment and pioneering spirit has established Eco Beach Resort as a top-tier destination. Now is the time to introduce a custodian with renewed energy, smarts and skillset, creativity, understanding and alignment to the asset class and opportunity ensuring its continued growth and success into the future. This sale represents a rare opportunity to acquire a well-established, eco-friendly tourism asset in one of Australia’s most pristine and iconic locations.
Karl Plunkett / Founder-Owner- Operator / Eco Beach Resort
"Back in the day, I'd bring my boat across Roebuck Bay from Broome...the fishing grounds and waters around Eco Beach are world class incredible. At the end of a day’s fishing, I’d pull up for a late lunch on the beach always thinking what a shame it was that I’d have to leave this amazing place to get back before nightfall. Sharing the incredible Eco beach setting and experience was the catalyst for building the resort.
In designing and developing Eco Beach, we've always had the philosophy of 'people pay for experience and sleep for free'. Creating this experiential offering where guests can immerse themselves in the stunning Kimberley has been a privilege and a joy. We love hosting guests at the resort, putting them in nature and seeing their reactions, we call it disconnect to reconnect...
After a multi-year effort to secure freehold tenure, we successfully transitioned from leasehold to freehold earlier this year along with securing long-term tenure for the airstrip. Eco Beach is now perfectly placed for a new owner-operator to continue connecting people with the Kimberley, adding new vigour and touch to the incredible asset we’ve been so lucky to enjoy.
I’ve had an amazing 25 years at Eco Beach, but my core focus has always been my Eco Structure's and Wabi Systems businesses, I just feel now is the time to pass on to a larger brand and team with a track record of delivering premium nature-based experiences.
As a solo operator of the resort and through my business manufacturing glamping tents, I’m aware how much the premium nature-based tourism sector has evolved over the past decade and half… now’s the time to take Eco Beach to a new level of experiential offering and excellence……. it’s an opportunity with no limits" says Karl Plunkett.
