The Barron Falls Hotel located at 30-34 Coondoo Street, Kuranda sold negotiated by Savills experts Kathryn Brassington and Leon Alaban.
Savills Australia and New Zealand announce the sale of the Barron Falls Hotel in Kuranda, Queensland, facilitated through an off-market process. The previous owners, Don and Shalene Little, have dedicated over eleven years to operating the venue, building a strong reputation and a loyal following within the community.
The transaction follows a series of successful sales in the region last year, including the Union Jack Hotel & The Jack House, Raintrees Tavern (lease), and the Hambledon Hotel, further demonstrating the strong demand for quality hospitality assets in Far North Queensland.
Located at 30-34 Coondoo Street, Kuranda, Barron Falls Hotel occupies a substantial 3,030 sqm corner site*, strategically positioned in the heart of this renowned tourist destination. Approximately 28 kilometres* northwest of Cairns, Kuranda is a picturesque town surrounded by lush tropical rainforest, in the Wet Tropics of Queensland’s World Heritage Area.
It is a popular gateway for visitors exploring the region’s natural attractions, including the world famous Barron Falls and Barron Gorge National Park. Easily accessible via the Kuranda Range Road, Kuranda Scenic Railway, or Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, the town attracts a steady flow of domestic and international visitors.
Barron Falls Hotel has long been a cornerstone of Kuranda’s hospitality scene, offering a relaxed and welcoming environment for locals and tourists alike. The property features a traditional pub-style venue, including a bistro, sports bar, beer garden and gaming room (25 EGMs), catering to both the town’s residents and its strong tourist market.
The hotel underwent significant refurbishment works pre-COVID, including upgrades to the beer garden, bistro and an extension to the main building to accommodate a purpose-built gaming room.
The Barron Falls Hotel has been acquired by Paul McMahon of McMahon Hotels Group, marking his fifth pub acquisition. Mr McMahon expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating, "We are excited to add the Barron Falls Hotel to our portfolio. Kuranda is a unique and vibrant destination, and we look forward to building on the hotel's strong reputation while continuing to offer a welcoming experience for both locals and visitors alike."
McMahon Hotels Group has built a strong reputation in the hospitality industry, successfully revitalising and managing multiple venues across Queensland.
Kath Brassington, Associate Director, Hotels at Savills Australia and New Zealand said, “Don and Shalene Little have established a fantastic foundation for the incoming buyer, and with McMahon Hotels Group at the helm, both locals and tourists are sure to continue frequenting the venue.”
Leon Alaban, Head of Hotels – National – Savills Australia and New Zealand said, “The hotel has delivered strong revenue and earnings over the past three years, offering a solid base for the incoming buyer to build upon.”
The sale of this landmark property underscores continued investor confidence in Far North Queensland’s tourism and hospitality sector.
Savills Australia would like to congratulate both the vendor and the purchaser on this successful transaction and looks forward to seeing the continued success of Barron Falls Hotel under new ownership.
