A new surreal sanctuary has opened in Queenstown’s city centre. At The Central, a creative, cool vibe meets a sense of childlike curiosity, with a bold design inspired by magic, nature and vivid colour. This is one of three eye-catching boutique properties recently opened in New Zealand by the Naumi brand.
Naumi Hotels has created a 15 key whimsical wonderland, unlike any other property in Queenstown. The brand’s signature creative approach showcases innovative and unexpected design details, playing with exaggerated scales and disproportionate sensory details in the public areas to create a memorable experience for guests.
Gaurang Jhunjhnuwala CEO of Naumi Hotels Australia & New Zealand told WILLIAMS MEDIA, "The Central, one of two new Naumi properties in Queenstown, is one of our most colourful, striking hotels yet. The interior design has an almost surreal quality - from the abstract wall art by Deborah Moss in the guest rooms to the sculptural reception area. It's whimsical, fun, unique - all elements that are core to Naumi's design philosophy. And you couldn't ask for a better location right in the heart of Queenstown."
A lounge with roaring fire and comfy seating forms the heart of the hotel. It’s here complimentary award-winning New Zealand wines are served every evening between 5-6pm, and complimentary snacks and soft drinks throughout the day. Adjacent to the lounge is a garden area, perfect for an alfresco breakfast. Guests can indulge their inner-child with an old-fashioned kiwiana sweet selection, or make a brew at the espresso station.
Expect to find the same creative use of light, shape and bold colour in the three bedroom types, “Habitat”, “Oasis” and the “Junior Suite”. All feature specially commissioned artwork by local artist Deborah Moss, in a cacophony of colour and light. Habitat rooms have an earthy hue and private courtyard, whilst Oasis rooms are amongst the largest in Queenstown, sitting amongst the treetops, with most enjoying a private balcony. The Junior Suite features a bold, viridescent colour palette and spacious accommodation.
"With the interior design for The Central by Naumi, we strived for a bold aesthetic, verging on biophilic surrealism, in a bid to recreate a moment of child-like wonder, sensed with a glance to the Southern Alps or the shake of a snow globe. The ground floor nods to the pink and red tones of the flora outside; the first floor alludes to the greens of the treetops; and the second storey reflects the moody blue tones of the sky. We tapped into the work of artist Deborah Moss, who’s work draws upon the power and dynamism of nature. We printed a series of her works to an exaggerated scale, and colour-matched with Dulux colours, so that when guests move from the corridor space to their room, they’re greeted with a stark, whimsical contrast that again gives that sense of child-like wonder to the experience of staying at The Central" said Liv Macfarlane, Director of Undercurrent.
With its fun, bold design and a location on Sydney Street, right in the heart of all the Queenstown action, The Central certainly challenges the status quo.
