The stunning refurbishment of an Sydney icon was spearheaded by Reward Group with designs from renowned architects Fender Katsalidis.
The Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has reopened its doors, unveiling a $60 million transformation that enhances the luxury experience of this iconic Australian hotel.
The comprehensive refurbishment, headed by Reward Groupand interior design from renowned architects Fender Katsalidis, brings a fresh, sophisticated feel to the landmark property, originally opened in 1966.
This is Reward Group's fourth time in recent years involved in refurbishing the Sofitel Wentworth, which previously included the grand ballroom, guestrooms and corridors, including extensive back of house areas.
The extensive complex renovation include the grand lobby entrance, an upgraded club lounge, the introduction of two new restaurants and two bars. Among the standout features is the newly designed Level 5 Delta Rue restaurant, offering an elegant dining experience that caters to both intimate dinners and special events.
One of the most talked-about additions is the Wentworth Bar, located on the hotel’s stylish new terrace beneath a striking detailed copper structure. The large steel structure works involved numerous crane lifts to access the level five terrace, to place steel, copper, floor finishes and substantial joinery and furniture pieces. The bar offers a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere, making it the perfect spot for after-work drinks or casual gatherings. The team have created an inviting al fresco setting has quickly become a favorite among both hotel guests and Sydney locals.
Reward Group’s Associate Director, Jimmy Lee, reflected on the significance of the project, highlighting his team’s long-standing connection with the Sofitel Wentworth. “This refurbishment has been an incredibly rewarding experience for us, and it has been a privilege to contribute to its next chapter.”” said Lee.
The construction process was navigated around an operational hotel, which required the works to be staged in a strategic manner to ensure minimal disruption for the staff and guest experience. the hotel where still able to maintain the access and use their numerous meetings and conference facilities throughout the project. Mr Lee said “This project is a testament of our capabilities as a team, to deliver a project while working closely with all stakeholders to navigate any challenges.”
General Manager Sam Panetta said, Reward Group have always had a long-standing relationship with the Sofitel, and it was a pleasure to have them working back with the owners’ group Futuro and Accor. Rewards experience and dedication to the project was testament to their experience and understanding of complex hotel project of this nature, while being aware of the complexity and challenges of working withing a full serviceoperational hotel, such as the Wentworth.
Located in Sydney’s financial district, the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has long been a cornerstone of the city’s hospitality scene, hosting distinguished guests including Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth II, Elton John, and Bill Gates.
The recent transformation was backed by a strategic partnership between KKR, Futuro Capital, and Marprop Real Estate Investors, who acquired the property in 2021. This significant investment underscores the strong confidence in Australia’s hospitality sector as the nation’s tourism and business travel industry continues to thrive post-pandemic.
With a heritage spanning nearly six decades, the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth remains a symbol of elegance and distinction.
Mr Panetta said the reopening solidifies its status as a premier destination for both international visitors and local guests, as it reclaims its place at the forefront of Sydney’s luxury hotel offerings.
“The newly transformed Sofitel not only offers refined accommodation but also serves as a testament to the city’s continued prominence as a global travel and business hub.”
