‘Modern history at its finest’ has been created as a result of the refurbishment of Hobart’s heritage listed Islington Hotel.
The Islington Hotel is a luxury boutique hotel in South Hobart, Tasmania, with a history dating back to 1847.
The property refurbishment has tastefully enhanced each of its 11 suites and the guest areas, with touches that reflect the spirit of the early Tasmanians who inspired it.
Each suite is distinctively designed and adorned by original art, and rich fabrics. Large windows capture picturesque views of Mount Wellington, Hobart’s iconic landmark. The bathrooms are equipped with heated flooring, marble rain showers, and deep bathtubs.
The Loft Suite
The styling embodies an eclectic blend of modern elements and historical flourishes, centred around a king-sized bed, handcrafted exclusively for the hotel by A.H. Beard—Australia’s oldest bedding manufacturer based in southern Tasmania.
The adults-only hotel is a haven of tranquillity, with leisure and corporate guests able to relax in the Library, Conservatory, Morning and Games rooms and wander throughout immaculately manicured gardens. The library is available for exclusive dining for groups of up to 10 people on the 19th Century Mahogany dining table surrounded by art, antiques and history.
The hotel also features unique pieces from Europe and Asia and artworks, including etchings by David Hockney, lithographs by Brett Whiteley, and a painting by Matisse.

Islington’s restaurant has been revamped with soft lighting, warm tones, and glass walls to best capture the gardens and Mt Wellington views. Executive Chef Anthony Illingworth directs the restaurant, which serves a modern Australian menu crafted from the finest Tasmanian produce, paying tribute to the region’s land and sea. Each dish is a celebration of the seasons and is accompanied by an extensive wine list.
The refurbishment of the Islington Hotel Hobart has been undertaken by La Vie Hotels & Resorts, which acquired the hotel in 2022. The hotel is an established, award-winning member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection.
For decades, the Islington Hotel has welcomed guests. Today, this storied property steps into a new chapter, reimagined to meet the needs of travellers who seek both traditional Tasmania and timeless luxury.
“Our goal was to preserve the essence of Islington’s heritage while enhancing the guest experience with thoughtful modern touches. Islington’s signature character is reflected in its 11 exclusive rooms, each one a tribute to the historic relevance of Islington in Tasmania”. Marcus Hanna, Chief Operating Officer of La Vie Hotels and Resorts.
“As part of this next chapter, the Islington Hotel continues to invite guests to be a part of its living story. The Islington is more than just a place to stay. It’s a destination where past and present meet to create something truly special”.
“We are thrilled to welcome guests into this new era of the Islington, and we look forward to seeing how each of them will leave their mark on our rich history.” Hanna continues.
For special occasions, the Islington Hotel’s newly transformed restaurant and event spaces offer a perfect balance of grandeur and intimacy, whether for weddings, corporate retreats, or exclusive gatherings. The hotel’s warm, personal, and welcoming atmosphere provides the ideal backdrop for any event, making each occasion as unforgettable as the setting itself.
