Property developer Golden Age Group has announced plans to convert Tyne House in Surry Hills into a luxury 18-level, 285-room hotel; adding a further 144 rooms to the existing approved proposal - set to open in 2020.
Golden Age contracted to purchase the site in early 2018 with the vision of developing a lifestyle hotel that will cater to the changing dynamic of the hotel market, and capitalise on the strong fundamentals of the accommodation market in Sydney.
The development will be used to launch a new lifestyle hotel brand into the Australian accommodation market. The hotel will celebrate nature and sustainability while showcasing Australian products and produce. This development will transform the precinct and revitalise a key gateway into the Sydney CBD.
After the success Golden Age Group enjoyed from the development and divestment of the Melbourne Sheraton Hotel, the launch of this new lifestyle brand will see the group enter a new chapter of managing hotels across the country.
The site is currently occupied by two commercial buildings and has an approved DA for a mixed-use scheme incorporating 50 apartments and a 141-room hotel. Golden Age is seeking to amend the existing DA into a pure hotel.
Of the existing buildings, the larger 10-storey building known as ‘Tyne House’ was completed in 1916. While not heritage listed, the building is considered to be of heritage value, especially with its early use of a modern glazed façade, which is largely intact. This façade will be maintained and be a feature of the new development.
Renowned architects Bates Smart has been appointed to the proposed 18-level hotel, which will offer 285 hotel rooms and high-end amenities including a bar, restaurant and gym.
Jeff Xu, managing director of Golden Age Group said that expansion of this element of its portfolio is pivotal to Golden Age Group’s future vision.
“ The hotel market in Sydney and Melbourne is thriving with strong, stable occupancy and increasing demand due to the extensive events calendar and growth in international tourism,” said Mr Xu.
“This hotel will mark a new chapter for Golden Age Group of managing hotels across the country.”
Construction will commence later this year, and the hotel slated to be open and operating in 2020.
