Auckland International Airport has announced the conversion of the former Qantas headquarters into a new $30-40 million hotel.
A spokeman from Auckland International Airport has advised that the former Qantas headquarters will be converted and revamped into a 144-room, 3 star Airport Hotel - with a floor being added to the existing building.
The hotel will complement the nearby 2-star Hotel ibis budget Auckland Airport and the 4-star Novotel Auckland Airport.
No management agreement has been signed thus a brand is expected to be announced in the comming months. Dalman Architects based out of Christchurch have been engaged to design the hotel, with work possibly starting later this year.
It has also been reported a fourth hotel which is expected to be five-star is planned for the airport however no details have been released.
Auckland International Airport has seen huge growth in terms of visitor numbers and inbound flights, it has recently announced.
In the year to 30 June 2018, the total number of passengers using Auckland Airport increased by 5.7% to 20.5 million with international passengers reaching 11.2 million (up 4.1% on FY17) and domestic passengers lifting 7.7% to 9.3 million.
2018 also saw good growth in international passenger markets with Chinese arrivals continuing to grow, up 10.9% in the year, and routes into the US and European markets also growing through the use of larger, next-generation aircraft such as Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A350.
